Pre-Dissertation Fellowships

The American Institute of Bangladesh Studies offers short-term grants to graduate students pursuing studies of Bangladesh funded by the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs through the Council of American Overseas Research Centers. Due to grant funding restrictions, these awards can only be made to US Citizens at this time.

Eligibility requirements:

  • are an Individual Member of AIBS (click here for membership information) and
  • have completed at least one year of graduate study in a recognized Ph.D. granting institution and
  • are a U.S. citizen.

Awardees should be enrolled in a graduate program but not yet at the dissertation research or writing stage. The grant provides a stay of between 2 and 4 months in Bangladesh that may be used for language study, resource assessment, or network building to aid in the completion of a competitive dissertation proposal. Your application must demonstrate how the period spent in Bangladesh will enhance your dissertation research and benefit your long-term career goals.

The award is for $3,000, plus round-trip air fare.

Please note that all applications require a $25 processing fee. Awarding a grant to a student from a US institution that is a member of the AIBS will incur no additional fees but for submissions from non-represented institutions there is a $250 membership fee to be paid before an award can be dispersed.

Application Deadline: Will be coming soon (tentative date is September 15, 2013), for research beginning in spring or summer of the following year.
